Laurence Girard
Chief Executive Officer
Laurence Girard is the CEO and founder of fruitstreet.com. Laurence was a pre-med student in the undergraduate degree program at the Harvard University Extension School for two years before he decided to pursue fruitstreet.com full time and move to San Francisco. In high school, Laurence played soccer for the New York Red Bulls academy as a goalkeeper which sparked his initial interest in health. He later decided to pursue a career focused on social impact and spent a year volunteering before college in the emergency room at Huntington Hospital in the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. Laurence has also assisted with research at Boston Children's Hospital, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, and has published and presented medical papers in peer review medical journals and conferences. His interest in technology developed during a five year period where he wrote content for large digital media companies such as Yahoo! and Demand Media. In addition, Laurence's initial interest in video collaboration and telemedicine stems from his time volunteering for an education non-profit called Learn to Be which provides free online tutoring for K-12 students. Laurence aims to build a team of physicians and technologists to help people worldwide improve their lifestyle and prevent chronic disease.
Asif Ali
Chief Medical Officer
Asif Ali is a physician, educator, researcher, medical author. He is a clinical professor in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at the Texas Medical Center in Houston and works in private practice as a partner in Houston Cardiology Consultants. His focus is on prevention of chronic medical conditions via medical businesses that aid patients in education, diagnostics, and therapeutics. He has served as Chief Medical Officer, Chief of Cardiology, and Chief of Education at area hospitals in Houston. He has co-authored an international medical book published by McGraw Hill and frequently is interviewed on local and national television.
Maulik Purohit
Chief Science Officer
Dr. Purohit serves on the Board of Directors as Chief Scientist for Fruit Street because of his passion for health and wellness. He completed his undergraduate degree at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. He then went on to complete medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX with a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor Medical School in Houston, TX. He then completed an NIH-sponsored research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, based out of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Purohit then stayed as faculty Harvard Medical School in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Purohit's fellowship training was in neuro-rehabilitation and brain injury. His research focus was on the epidemiology and science of novel integrative medicine therapies and lifestyle medicine on potential neuroplasticity.
Tara Mardigan, MS, MPH, RD
Lead Dietitian
Tara Mardigan, MS, MPH, RD is a Boston-based nutritionist focused on lifestyle modification for disease prevention, wellness, optimal health and performance. She counsels clients at Lown Cardiovascular Center in Brookline, MA and in private practice. She is a fearless and creative ambassador of healthful and flavorful food choices and is a firm believer that ‘good for you can taste good, too.’ Her mission is to inspire others to find the most nourishing foods and lifestyle choices to meet their health needs and palates. Tara created and served as the team nutritionist for the 3-time World Champion Boston Red Sox from 2004-2014 and also worked with as an oncology nutritionist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute during that time period. She studied nutrition at the University of New Hampshire (BS), Yale-New Haven Hospital (dietetic internship) and Tufts University (MS, MPH) where she focused on nutrition communication as well as health disparities.
Christopher F. Meatto, Esq.

Christopher, a cum laude graduate of the Harvard Law School, is the founder of HarvardLaw74.com and works with startups both in early stage as an advisor and late stage in dispute resolution situations. His first startup experience was as a member of the Swatch Watch founding team in the 1980's. He works as an independent advisor on a fixed fee basis and brings an holistic approach to the practice of law and business. His law school thesis was on Health Maintenance Organizations. He has three adult sons, who graduated from Yale, Harvard, and Brown, so he is well acquainted with nurturing young entrepreneurs and intellectuals.
Ravi K. Kamepalli MD, FIDSA, CWS

Dr.Ravi K.Kamepalli is a Board certified Infectious Disease physician and a certified wound specialist practicing at Regional infectious diseases and infusion center, Lima, Ohio since 2003. Dr.Kamepalli received his medical degree from Guntur Medical College, Guntur, AP, and India. He did his residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical center, Brooklyn, New York and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Center, New York. He has also been conferred Fellow of Infectious Disease Society of America (FIDSA) for achieving professional excellence in infectious diseases. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in department of Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease, The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences.

He was the Past Medical director of hyperbaric clinic and chief of division of Infectious Diseases at St.Ritas Medical Center. He has passion for all things infection and wound related with a particular emphasis on Healthcare delivery and Transition of Care. He has participated on multiple Expert Consensus Panels and has been a speaker at multiple national and international conferences. He is actively involved in clinical research in over 52 Clinical trials

Matthew D. Epstein, MD
Director of Sleep Services
Matthew D. Epstein, MD is the Associate Director of the Atlantic Health Sleep Centers in Morristown, NJ, and is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He graduated magna cum laude from SUNY Albany, received his Medical Degree from McGill University in Montreal, and performed his medical residency at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Epstein's fellowship training in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine were completed at NYU Medical Center. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine. He has published numerous articles on sleep-disordered breathing, serves as a reviewer for several medical journals, and frequently lectures on sleep and sleep disorders. Dr. Epstein has been listed on the Consumers’ Research Council of American Guide to America’s Top Physicians, Best Doctors in America, and New Jersey Monthly Top Doctors.
Adam Prince, MD

Adam graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in biology, and received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. While at Drexel University, he served as treasurer of the Health Outreach Program, which managed four student-run free clinics throughout the Philadelphia area. Lauren Pilla

Lauren Pilla grew up in Cleveland Ohio. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in fashion design from The Fashion Institute of Technology. Prior to joining Fruit Street Health, Lauren spent 4 years working for global fashion companies before deciding to transition into healthcare. She is a former dancer who trained extensively in ballet. Her dance background has played a major role in shaping her lifelong passion for health and physical activity. Lauren is focused on engaging with people to improve their lifestyle and well-being.
Frances Illozue

Frances Ilozue is a primary care physician and a graduate of Saint Petersburg State Medical Academy in Russia. She did her residency at University at Buffalo and Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital. Dr. Ilozue is the current owner of Rapha Family Medicine in Buffalo NY, which provides comprehensive primary care, based on the patient-doctor partnership. She is very passionate about wellness and prevention and hopes to collaborate with like-minded individuals or groups seeking to make a difference in the lives of those less privileged all over the world.
Hatem Abou-Sayed, MD, MBA, FACS

Dr. Tim A. Sayed has been practicing plastic and reconstructive surgery in South Florida for over ten years. He is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, after undergoing medical school and rigorous training at two of the country's most prestigious institutions of surgical education: Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School) and the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). A leader among his peers, he graduated as the top student in the largest high school class in Texas before graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Berkeley. James Toussaint, MD

R. James Toussaint, MD is a surgeon at The Orthopaedic Institute where he specializes in degenerative, traumatic and sports-related foot & ankle disorders. Prior to joining TOI, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program in Boston, MA. He subsequently completed his foot & ankle fellowship training at the world-renowned OrthoCarolina Foot & Ankle Institute in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Toussaint earned his medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine, where he graduated among the top of his class and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Chicago. Dr. Krishna Tangella, MD, MBA, FCAP

Dr. Krishna Tangella, MD, MBA, FCAP is a board certified Anatomic and Clinical pathologist practicing in private practice in the Urbana-Champaign. He actively signs out surgical pathology cases, bone marrow and cytology cases. He is a medical director of multiple CAP accredited laboratories in both hospital and outpatient settings. He actively participates in collaborative translational research at world renowned Beckman Institute at University of Illinois-UC. His research interests include cellular biomedical imaging and optical characteristics of cancers. He actively teaches medical students and internal medicine residents as a Clinical Associate Professor in Departments of Pathology and Internal Medicine at University of Illinois College of Medicine. He has published multiple peer reviewed articles in medical journals. Dr. Tangella holds an MD from the prestigious Madras Medical College, completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine, and also holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Besides being the recipient for physician of the year nomination, he has served as the chair of medicine department at Mercy medical center in Springfield Massachusetts.
Patrick Tyrance M.D., M.P.P.

Dr. Patrick Tyrance is a Harvard-trained orthopedic surgeon who takes a patient-facing approach to healthcare. He believes in empowering patients with personal data that helps them make more informed decisions regarding their health and wellness. His days as a competitive major college linebacker and professional athlete has helped shape his particular interest in the importance of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of disease. He is currently completing an MBA in healthcare from The George Washington University. After more than ten years as a surgeon he is transitioning to healthcare consulting in leadership development and exploring strategies to maximize physician and patient engagement in the healthcare system. Samir is also a Senior Director at Aetna and is extremely knowledgeable about health care reform, public exchanges, private exchanges and how the different stakeholders in healthcare are reacting to telehealth and wellness programs. Samir plays a key role in the implementation of several large-scale strategic initiatives.
Amanda Itzkoff, MD

Amanda Itzkoff, MD completed her undergraduate education at Cornell University where she graduated as co-valedictorian of her college class with a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Economics. Dr. Itzkoff then attended NYU School of Medicine. She completed both her Psychiatry residency and fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, also in New York City, and remains on faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Itzkoff was also selected as the winner of the Adele Zinbeg Award for Women's Leadership in Psychiatry. In her private practice, Dr. Itzkoff uses both medication and talk therapy to treat psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance abuse and dependence, and eating disorders. Dr. Itzkoff is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is also a member of the the American Society of Reproductive Medicine and maintains an active Reproductive Psychiatry practice, treating women through the peri-partum period, as well as treating couples and women facing infertility, using ART including IVF. After 2005 she entered private practice becoming after a short time a shareholder/partner in Gastro One, single specialty Gastroenterology group in Memphis TN, clinical position that she held for eight years. David Andrew Friedman, MD

David Andrew Friedman, MD is an adult clinical cardiologist at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System and an assistant professor of cardiology at the Hofstra North Shore-Long Island Jewish School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians, and an Associate Fellow in the New York Academy of Medicine. As current Chief of Heart Failure Services at Franklin Medical Center, a NS-LIJ affiliate hospital, Dr. Friedman helps manage with various forms of cardiovascular disease as well as cardiomyopathies. He manages patient care at several medical offices and hospitals within the North Shore-LIJ System including North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and North Shore Franklin Hospital.

After graduating from The City University of New York Medical School Program, the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, Dr. Friedman then transferred with advanced standing to Albany Medical College of Union University. He completed his residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital with a post-doctorate year in research cardiomyopathes, and went on to cardiology fellowship at Winthrop Hospital, affiliate of the Stony Brook School of Medicine. He is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, adult echocardiography, nuclear cardiology & exercise stress testing, as well as internal medicine. He has been an online medical contributor to a number of media outlets including WebMD, Healthday, and Medpage and has appeared for medical segments on local and national radio and television programs. Diaa Hussein, MD,MPH

Dr. Hussein is a Family Physician practicing in Morganton, North Carolina since 2002. Dr. Hussein received his medical degree from Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt in 1978. He completed one year rotating Internship in Cairo University Hospitals in Egypt, one year Internship in Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, three years Family Practice residency in Somerset Medical Center in Somerset, New Jersey. Jaime Wong, MD, MBA, FRCSC, FACS

A urologic surgeon who is an expert in endourologic, laparoscopic, and robotic surgeries, Dr. Wong also serves as the Medical Director of the Jenkins Clinic. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Walter H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University and an Adjunct Instructor in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University. Holding two Bachelor of Science degrees, a Diploma in Engineering and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, he pursued postgraduate residency training at the same facility. He then completed a Fellowship in Laparoscopic Urology and Endourology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Dr Kelleher has held clinical, research, and administrative positions at St. Vincent's Westchester, Zucker Hillside, and McLean Hospitals. Jed Shapiro, M.D.

Jed Shapiro, M.D. is an investor and advisor to Fruit Street. He grew up in South Florida and graduated from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He completed his post graduate training in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management, and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Miami. Dr. Shapiro is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and specializes in pain management and anesthesiology. He also is a physician review consultant as well as an entrepreneur. Dr. Shapiro owns a startup apparel company and most recently invested in a medical device company specializing in sleep apnea. In his spare time Dr. Shapiro enjoys football, photography, cooking, and horticulture.
Dr. Kamal Patel

Dr. Patel has been working with pioneers in the field of oncology, personalized medicine, and wellness for nearly 10 years. He is the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center, a fellow at Doximity, and an assistant professor in the department of radiology at the Chicago Medical School. He has given presentations and speeches to a wide variety of audiences, including physicians, patients, and the press (FOX News, at the NFL Chicago Bears Press Conference, and others). Manj Gunawardane, MD

Manj Gunawardane, MD is the Hospitalist Director and Utilization Management Physician Advisor at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland, CA. He trained in Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore where he also attended medical school. His clinical practice is in adult hospital medicine and his interests lie in the approach to population health management and community partnerships from the perspective of large medical centers and health systems. Within the realm of health informatics he is actively engaged in EHR optimization and using data analytics to drive quality and outcomes. His interests beyond the hospital lie in healthcare technology, nutrition and wellness, and he enjoys exploring the wine regions of the world.
Michael Caruso

E. Fred McPhail III, M.D.

Dr. McPhail graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and completed internship in Surgery and residency in Urology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a board-certified by the American Board of Urology and practices in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Among others, his interests include surgical, metabolic, and preventative management of kidney stone disease, the use of technology for delivery of high quality patient-centered healthcare, and health and wellness.
Michael Mascia

Dr. Mascia is the founder and President of Veritas Health Care (VHC), a global non-profit that is dedicated to Building Better Health and Health Care through Patient-Physician Cooperation and Cooperatives. Currently working clinically as an Intensivist, he cares for critically ill and injured patients at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. Mascia obtained his combined MD, MPH degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and Tulane University School of Public Health in 1972. After his Family Medicine internship, he served as a resident and chief resident in the University of Miami department of Family Medicine. His 14 year Family Medicine career in rural Maine included, but was not limited to full spectrum patient care, preventive care, care of the sick and injured at the local hospital, private homes, area nursing homes and his office, writing (he co-authored "The Stress Management Workbook: An action plan for taking control of your life and health"), community action (he founded The Health Development Institute, a non profit community health education organization), served as Chief of Staff and on many local hospital committees, and counseled many patients on health and wellness through his office practice and the hospital programs he helped develop. In addition, he designed and built the Continuous Quality and Performance Improvement program for the local hospital that raised the bar on QIPI to a scientific standard.

Dr. Mascia's Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Hyperbaric Medicine training at the University of Maryland and Shock Trauma was completed by the end of 1991 and since early 1992, he has limited his clinical work to Anesthesiology and Critical Care in several academic tertiary care centers. Board certified in Critical Care and Anesthesiology, he established the Anesthesiology Critical Care Division and Fellowship at SUNY in Syracuse, New York, and continued clinical, teaching, research and administrative work at Tulane, West Virginia University, and most recently at Geisigner Medical Center.

When not caring for critically ill and injured patients, Michael F. Mascia, MD, MPH has a professional focus on writing (The Stress Management Workbook, Inside Katrina), building quality and performance improvement tools (StepWisley®™©, IQFirst™©, B2=Best Care™©, Take The Best Care™©, Building Best Practices) and Building Better Health and Health Care through VHC (the non profit) and his private consulting company. He is currently exploring and expanding provision of care and supervision, teaching, administration and research through www, telephone, telemedicine, internet and all electronic means that are likely to enhance front line patient care. Rogerio Teixeira da Silva, MD, PhD

His academic carrier was developed at the Department of Orthopedics at Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he acted as a professor of the medical school. As a part of the professional training, he made a visiting fellowship during 6 months in United States, visiting The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, TOSH in Salt Lake City and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 1997. Dr. Michael Wieser

Dr. Michael Wieser graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has a Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. Dr. Wieser is a founding member of the Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio and the Institute of Orthopaedic Surgery in Lima, OH.

He has been a District III Delegate to the Ohio State Medical Association and a board member of the OSMA PAC. Dr. Wieser has traveled to Washington, D.C. to discuss medical issues with Ohio’s congressmen and senators.

Dr. Wieser is a partial owner and board member of a startup company, Gentegra, which offers a suite of stabilization products for ambient temperature storage of DNA, RNA, and fluid bio specimens.

Since 1988 Dr. Wieser has been a sideline physician for local Ohio high schools covering football, basketball and wrestling.
